violence aimed at the united states. muslim protesters stormed the u.s. embassy. they're angry over a film they consider insulting to the prophet mohammed. our chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in the region with us tonight from istanbul. what was this about? and was the embassy ever in any real danger? >> reporter: it was never in any real danger, but this could escalate, and the situation remains tense. it all began this afternoon, when several hundred demonstrators gathered in front of the u.s. embassy. then a few dozen of the demonstrators managed to scale the perimeter walls, get inside the embassy, pull down the u.s. flag, replace it with a black islamic flag. then egyptian security forces moved in to secure the perimeter. under the former president, hosni mubarak, this would have been very difficult. protesters wouldn't have been allowed anywhere near the u.s. embassy. today they were able to scribble graffiti on the embassy wall. this was all triggered by a movie, a fringe, radical movie made in the united states that is insulting to islam. and the danger, brian, is

three big bad/good battlegrounds. china, europe, and the united states. look, we know that china used to be one of the world's great growth engines. it almost single-handedly kept the global economy afloat during the global recession as the chinese communists figured out how to spur domestic spending. but after playing the role of the world's economic engine for so long, the chinese locomotive seems to be in danger of running off the rails. each piece of data is weaker than the last. so what's good about that? well, much of the slowdown in china seems somewhat self-inflicted. when the purists realized it overstimulated the economy, governments hit the brakes and in many ways still seems like it's happening. the hope is that the chinese will stop stepping on the brake pedal but start cutting rates, adding real ago taken to the downshift in their economy. how about europe? the european central bank meeting this week and we're expecting to hear some chatter in unison that's going to reverse the declining economies over there and maybe unite to save the spanish banking system. you can mon

could be the worst year for the west nile virus since it was detected in the united states. >> it was introduced in 1999 and spread over a series of years through the bird population and got into the mosquitoes and the mosquitos bit people. >> reporter: the number of cases this year is sky rocketing. nearly 1,600 infections reported and 66 deaths, up 40% in one week. >> it is a late summer disease. the fact that we have so many cases this early and so widespread does not bode well. >> reporter: every state except alaska and hawaii has seen outbreaks and nearly 70% of the cases come from six states, the hardest hit, texas with nearly half of the infections. health officials are launching efforts to prevent the spread of the potentially dangerous disease. from the air to the ground people are on patrol distributing flyers with preventive information and symptoms which tend to be mild in 80% of the cases. in 20% fevers, headaches and body aches and most worrisome for people over 70 are with weakened immune systems. west nile virus is a known threat for animals. while there is a vaccine f

. there's a hint right there. >>> one of the busiest stretches of freeway in the united states is shut down and so far so good. traffic around the 405 has been light today. drivers are using surface streets or most of them, i think, are just staying home. it shut down so road crews can demolish what's left of the bridge. the bridge and pillars will be replace sod that the freeway can be widened a bit. the freeway will be closed until monday morning and traffic seems to be getting an it just fine. obviously you can see the construction work right there. >>> caltrans is warning drivers for its plans to shut down the san mateo bridge for to two weekends next month. the shutdown will allow crews to repair a cracked support beam discovered in 2010. the bridge will be closed if all goes as planned from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. october 19th through the 22nd and again those same times the following weekend, october 26th-29th. the dumbarton bridge will be the best alternative for most drivers looking to get across the bay to the peninsula. >>> when we come back we will check in with john miller
